When you wish to explore a sublocation, you have the choice of which level to explore it at.
Sublevels have a limited range of levels that they offer, and when you first click on it's name to explore you will be offered one of those levels.
If you are not happy with what is offered, simply click the "return to (main area name)", re-click the sublocation and repeat the process until the level you seek within the levels offered becomes available.
Handy for those wishing to explore as high or low as possible.

You can also reload the page that says the level choices and it should change on each reload. It might take 10 reloads to get the level you want but it's worth it.

Well the game picks the level, but you can keep reloading to get one that works for you. can take many reloads sometimes to find the sweet spot. (+3 for me).

I accumulated a lot of sublocations. Some of them, however, are at low levels - up to my level or one above. I'm used to adventuring at +4. How big an advantage are the sublocations? Is it worth it to use them at these levels, or should I just ignore them? Thanks for any advice or rules of thumb.

The big advantage of the sub-locations is the random bosses (have had boss xp awards close to 20,000 before). Have also noticed the xp and loot awarded is somewhat higher than in the normal areas (mileage may vary on this though).

With my arena fighters, the sublocations are useful when they've been there for a while and I've levelled up enough to then explore them at -5 lvls so there's no XP but the loot and items are better than normal locations :-)

My general estimate when adventuring in sublocations that do not go quite as high a level as I'd like (usually +6), is: 1-2 levels off from my preferred is okay, and with a boss or two I might come out ahead experience wise. 3 levels under my preferred target, I hope to get lucky and find 2-3 bosses to even things out. Any lower, and it's a "just for the money" kind of thing (which, with the cost of bunnygear, is pretty much all the time anyway).
With my main character, I never go anywhere under +2 unless it's for a specific reason (quest or trophy hunting), as there's no reason for me not to pick up as much EXP as I can with my level now in the low 40's.
