I started playing this game for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I was handed a "WIN! Free games for a year!" coupon at my neighborhood GameStop. In other words, I have NO idea what I'm doing in the character building department and was wondering if there is a specific way to build the best character, or if you just go with the flow and see what happens? I have been glancing through the message boards and did not see a similar question. I don't know if this is a frequently asked question or not, but it seemed to fit in this category the best. Don't hate me? <3

This is a great question, but seeing how I've been playing for over a year I've forgot most of the building up stuff, and I'm not sure I did such a great job in the early days anyways. Hopefully someone else will chime in with some tips.

I am definitely no expert on building a 'best' character, but I can tell you what I do.
For most of my characters I put my skill points in Body, since Warrior takes the least amount of skill points to achieve vs. Scholar or Enchanter. I usually begin by taking Thick Skin line, since having more health points means you can adventure longer without having to return to base and heal (which uses an AP). Then I start putting points in Adrenaline Surge and Rabid Windcat, since those are my weapons and armor of choice until at least level 20. After that, I start filling in the top row of Body (the vs. area), and work my way down.
Around lvl 18 or so, I usually add some skills to Mind or Spirit for TMP purposes.
Hope that helps. Oh and don't forget, always put your best card setup in your Gambit!

Hmm... I'm in the same boat when I first joined LoZ. (Darn you GameStop got me hooked...)
Anyway, when I started the game, I have no clue about the cards. But with skills and equipment, it is not my first, since i'm also currently playing another Free-to-Play (downloadabe) MMOPRG.
What can I say.. Like Treyvalt said, I used the same skill distribution on Warrior skills.... Because I prefer as a fighter (like in my Trickster game) than a mage or spell-caster. ^^; The only non-Body skills I learned are "Tin Opener" chains from Mind section and the "Dumb Luck" chains at the Spirit section.
What else... Well I am gratefull that CoZ stocks on nicer equipement than the Frying Pan I bought ages ago. xD (NPCed after I got a better sword and put my 2nd good weap. as "secondary".) Without them i'd be dead broke more on equip than the Warrior, Drunk, or even Duelist skills. T.T
As for Cards... Learned the full protential of this system more thanks to profile-viewing and guides, and it helps alot with monster encounters when you are high-lvl than your newbie-days. I focused on the " Fanucci Gambit" more, which I rack up my points to get a 28 so far. I need to adjust the Body, Spirit, and Mind sections though. ;o;
But in a closing, I did pretty well for being self-taught and without asking soo many questions to CoZ! xD

I would add to the great advise offered so far.
I just started this game last month and I'm working on a level 36 character who holds it's own at 5 levels above current most of the time.
I haven't focused on one particular skill group. I've just added skills that seem to make sense. I generally get over 100% on all the traps and mazes.
I got the Aimfiz Amulet early. This charm lets you return to base without using an action point. It really helps
I don't spend my hard-earned zorkmids on weapons and armor. The clan provides the good stuff free. I use the coin to improve my magic and pick up the extra skills provided at the various bases.
It took me a bit to figure out the cards. This forum has a post about combinations that is very helpful. When I finally hit 100 on Fanucci Gambit my win percentage increased immensely.
It's a slow slog at first but the better your character gets, the more you can increase the level you are fighting in. If you can fight at 4 levels above your characters current level then you can generally get 1000+ experience points for each battle. That helps you level up faster and get the free skill points.

I'm a little wary of posting my talents on public forums, but I've found one of the best things to do when beginning your character is to put your first few points into the Body tree for the extra health (as a given) and from there, decide whether you will be primarily an adventuring type or battle type. If your main focus is adventuring, then you're going to want to put points into talents that improve your TMPs, your personal favorite stance, bigger pockets for less base returns, that sort of thing... If you're going to be a battle character, you're going to want to put points into defeating other people's weapons, armor, stances and attitudes. If you're going to be a mule for clan donation, you're probably going to have the basic battle build, plus the haggling, trader skills.
