Is there an advantage to exploring at a different level?
If I'm constantly losing in a new location, I don't use the "too hard" button. I usually go somewhere else until I reach the next level and then come back and attack it. (especially in Pheebor, which initially was way, way hard)
If it is too easy, I've hit the "too easy" button and gone at a higher level, but didn't really see a big advantage in loot.
are your experiences the same?

I have found that the experience points gained are significant. I just ran a test. I'm at level 28. An adventure at 28 gave me 603 XP. Two levels up, at 30, I got 871 XP. Four levels up, at 32, I got 1010 XP.
If for some reason you don't want to increase your level, then it's useful to explore at a lower level for the opposite reason. For example, if you want to battle low-level BGL members, you can explore at lower levels and still snag Fanucci cards wiithout increasing your XP as much.

In addition to what DiiDii said, there is no XP advantage to exploring at +6 or higher, I explore at level 76 (71+5) and get about 2000xp per encounter. In sublocations I explore at +3 to ensure boss victories and get about 1400XP for a normal monster and up to 18,000 XP for a boss. It takes about a million XP between levels up in the 70's, so the numbers seem big but leveling still takes about 10 days per level up here.

If you are constantly losing in a new location, you might want to adventure at an older/lower level than you are until you can increase your gambit and/or items.
Also, each location has a different chance of TMPs and stances/weapons/armor that mobs are good/weak against. For example, my level 34 character is sticking with Fields of Frozen, even though 3 other areas have opened up after it. The reason is that I can safely adventure at +5 there, and hardly see any TMPs. If I go to the other areas, a majority of the monsters have a + vs my weapons and armor, and there are a ton more TMPs. In other words, just because a new location opened up, it doesn't mean its better.
And as DiiDii said, there is a big difference in xp as you adventure above your level.
I think the coffee set in, boy am I rambling...
